It really wasn't a great piece of art. It was scrawled on the back of a 14x14 centimeter fireproof page from the landing checklist. And the pressurized gloves made it hard to work the pencil.
But the artist/flight engineer had an hour to kill, and the best way since childhood was to climb a hill and scribble.
Aside from photographs, it was the first art created by a human while standing on the moon.
A year later, its selling price at the charity auction had an impressive number of zeros.
