Prompted by others in the space community, I dug around some more in Mir's history, and a followup is needed. Specifically, I want to mention the "forgotten" final Mir crew.
The crew of Soyuz TM-29 was the final operational crew aboard Mir. They left the space station in August 1999.
Eight months after the final operational crew had shut down Mir, the newly formed company MirCorp hoped to refurbish the aging station and attract businesses (including movie producers) to the orbital workshop.
MirCorp funded the Soyuz TM-30 mission in April 2000, carrying cosmonauts Sergei Zalyotin and Aleksandr Kaleri, to get Mir ready for possible future visitors.
But MirCorp was unable to attract businesses to Mir, and the 14-year-old station was deorbited in 2001.
