Armadillo Pee in Space?

The Rocket Team is serious about conserving all our resources on Earth and in space, and water is at the top of the list.

In space, we need about a gallon per day to drink, prepare food, brush our teeth, and wash our bodies. Over weeks and months of exploration, that adds up to a LOT of water.

Commander Hadfield is an expert on space water.

Water is heavy, and launching rockets full of water for us to use in space costs a pile of money and pollutes Earth's atmosphere.

So we recycle every drop - well, about 98% of the drops. That includes water in our breath, our sweat, and (wait for it) our pee.

Gross, right?

Not really. Earth has its own way of reusing water, called the water cycle. Water evaporates, turns into clouds, and the clouds rain. Our Earth water is continuously reused - today's glass of water might have come from armadillo pee a few months ago.

In space, we have a water cycle, but we use machines. And our recycled water in space is cleaner than what most of us drank on Earth. No armadillo pee up here!
