Today, all of us in Hab 5 got a short video from Dr. Santos, our favorite biology teacher. During her summer study trip, she is visiting Saturn's moon Titan.
Titan has a thick atmosphere, and the surface pressure is even higher than Earth at sea level - about 50 percent higher! She still wears her spacesuit, though, for comfort and safety.
Titan’s atmosphere has no oxygen, and it's even colder than our home on Mars at −290 °F (−179 °C). In fact, it was so cold, her camera gear wouldn't work right.
She said, "On a clear day like today, you can just make out Saturn through the thick haze. Titan has lakes of liquid methane, and the clouds have drops of methane. We have a full hydrologic cycle here, like Earth, but Earth is way warmer and has water rain and water lakes.
Instead of water evaporating from seas, forming clouds and rain, Titan does it all with methane and ethane. Now I wonder if there are any alien fish in these lakes."
