40 Years Ago: Voyager 2 at Jupiter

On July 9, 1979, NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft soared within 404,000 miles of Jupiter. Scientists were flooded with new information about the giant planet.

New photographs poured in of the planet and some of its many satellites.

The spacecraft sped past the moons Callisto and Ganymede on its way toward Europa. And it took amazing photos of six volcanoes erupting on Io.

Best of all, Voyager 2 is still going strong. It has entered interstellar space. It has joined its twin—Voyager 1—as the only human-made objects to enter the space between the stars.
