We accelerated at about three gees to get out of Jupiter's savage radiation belts as quickly as possible.
Feeling three times your weight is rough when you've been weightless for weeks. But one thing distracted us right away: the moon Io.
We flew low over the tortured landscape covered in active volcanoes spraying sulphur almost into orbit.
"That's Sally Ridge right under us," Kemp said, breathing heavy under the acceleration. "The first time I helped map out landing zones, I spotted it. It's a great landmark right on the edge of a volcano free area."
He breathed some more and rolled the spacecraft so we got a better view.
"I named it after my mom. She was thrilled, but she did say she wished the terrain wasn't so wrinkled."
Inspired by the characters in "Moon Zero Two", Hammer Films, 1969.
