We spent months exploring the main belt asteroids and some moons of Jupiter. After making enough discoveries to keep the scientists busy for years, we returned to Gordo Station at Jezero Crater on Mars.
We checked in just like any other space crew, and I was waiting on someone to recognize Captain Kemp. After all, he was the first human on Mars all those years ago.
But nothing happened. Kemp went about his business as usual, and the station hummed right along with prospectors and scientists coming and going.
That evening, we headed to the canteen for dinner. The corridor had various art pieces on the wall, and I spotted the iconic photo of Kemp on Mars. He was wearing his old-style spacesuit, and the lander "Falcon" was in the background.
I stopped and said, "Nice picture." I pointed at the image.
Kemp stopped and looked at it with me. He nodded and said, "That was a rough trip. But it's old news now. I'm hungry."
We never discussed it again. Looking back was not his way.
Inspired by the movie "Moon Zero Two", Hammer Films, 1969.
