The Four S's on Mars

When we're not in class, we spend a lot of time outside at Jezero Crater.  We explore, check instruments, and rescue rovers that get into sand traps.

But the best part of the day, when the shadows get long and the sun sinks behind the hills, is that last hike back to Gordo Station and Hab 5.

That's when you know it's time for the four S's: supper, sports, shower, and sleep.

Supper is always good.  With all the activity we have each day, we burn a lot of calories, and a plentiful supper replenishes us for another day.

We grow much of our own fruits and vegetables, but we have lots of food stored from supply ships too.  For example, last night I had beef tips with mushrooms from our frozen supplies, kale and radishes from our garden, cheese slices from a recent shipment, pears from our garden, and green tea (sent by Quinyang's family).

For sports, sometimes I play with board games and puzzles, sometimes I watch sports from Earth and other places on Mars, and sometimes I play sports at the auditorium,.  I really like playing Sepak Takraw.  Look it up, it's crazy!

Then I have a nice hot shower with water that we recycle from yesterday's use.  We also use Mars water we melt and remove from the icy soil.  After all, we should be able to live off the land like real pioneers!

Then it's time for sleep.  At Hab 5 I have a small bedroom I share with Pip.  There are bedrooms for eleven other students plus big common areas for eating and socializing.  Usually, we're happy to hit the rack at the end of a long, adventurous day.

And I have some long, pleasant dreams about more adventures on Mars.
