Years ago, the first students named the school at Gordo Station "Starry Night University." I figured it was because of the vivid starfield in our night sky.
But, in art class today, I learned that Starry Night University was really named to honor the school's first art teacher (who was also a rover mechanic and geologist). Everyone wore a lot of hats in the early days - they had to.
Dr. Melba van Gogh was a long-distant relative of the famous Earth artist named Vincent van Gogh. Vincent created a famous painting called "The Starry Night" in 1889.
When our current art teacher, Mr. Boyce, showed us The Starry Night, I was amazed. Van Gogh could really paint!
"Your assignment," Mr. Boyce said, "is to spend a week using your drawing software to create something that reminds you of The Starry Night."
It took me a while, but I came up with something the night before it was due. Mr. Boyce said it was "quite original."
