Space History: China’s First Female Astronaut

Liu Yan launched into space aboard Shenzhou-9 (Chinese: “Divine Craft”) on June 16, 2012. This was the fourth crewed flight of China’s Shenzhou program.

Working alongside commander Jing Haipeng and operator Liu Wang, she helped accomplish China’s first manned space docking with the space module Tiangong 1.

Liu Yang was in charge of medical experiments during the mission.
